YWCA Facilitators Training

Youth Action Coalition will offer two training sessions for ANYTOWN women to be trained as NCCJ Youth Facilitators as part of a partnership with the YWCA of Greater Hartford.  Participants will spend two days developing workshops on various topics that educate and empower young women from high schools across Hartford to become effective and conscious leaders.  Last year’s group developed workshops on the impact of media on women as well as how women of color experience race.  This year the focus will remain the same, but will also include topics such as women’s leadership, classism, bullying, and homophobia.  After the two trainings, the participating women will co-facilitate their own workshops at over 9 high schools in the Hartford area as part of YWCA’s Young Women’s Leadership Corps.  This event is invite only.

Any interested participant is asked to contact Muneer Panjwani at mpanjwani@nccj.org or by calling 860-683-1039 x102.

The Youth Action Coalition will once again convene for our 6th Annual ANYTOWN Reunion 2011 will be held at Camp Jewell.  The theme of this year’s Reunion is “Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Stopping All Bullying in Our Schools!” We will spend the day snow-tubing, ice-skating, song singing, games playing, broom balling, rock climbing, and updating each other on the change we have all brought to our families, friends, schools, and communities post-ANYTOWN.  We will build a larger coalition of ANYTOWN leaders, and will discuss a current social issue that impacts young people every day. Not to mention making hippos smile and the alligator our friend! All you have to do is send in the attached forms (Registration Form, YMCA Health Emergency Permission Form, and YMCA Liability Form).  Transportation to camp is provided from NCCJ offices in Windsor, Classical Magnet in Hartford, and a location in Western MA that is yet to be determined.  You may download the forms on this website or contact Muneer Panjwani at mpanjwani@nccj.org to request forms and to get transportation details.  The reunion is free to all participants who have ever attended ANYTOWN.  There is a suggested donation of $5-$10 to help us provide an ANYTOWN scholarship to those who cannot afford it.  All forms must be received by January 14th, 2011!

YES! Youth Establishing Strength Kickoff

Time: 9am - 5pm

Location: Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

              Springfield, MA

Who Can Attend: Pre-registed Participating Schools from CT, MA & RI

The national spotlight has been trained on the devastating impact of bullying following the recent suicides of youth who were targets of bullying in their schools. Concerned adults, including parents, educators, advocates, and law enforcement, have scrambled to come up with effective solutions. Through YES! (Youth Establishing Strength), our national youth campaign, NCCJ will do something unique - gather 300 high school students at a daylong conference to ask them what should be done to stop the epidemic of bullying that overshadows their lives. Integrating social media, technology, and the arts, this conference will launch a multi-year initiative that promotes youth voices, strategies, and solutions nationwide. Employing NCCJ’s effective youth leadership model, this national campaign’s goals are to:

• reduce the incidence of bullying in participating schools by 25% in three years;
• improve school climate in the areas of safety, diversity awareness, and inclusion;
• increase the number, capacity, and visibility of youth leaders; and
• mobilize youth nationwide across all media platforms to end bullying.

Students from 35 schools in Southern New England (CT, MA, RI) will spend the day identifying strategies and solutions to transform the culture in their schools. NCCJ and its Youth Leadership Team will incorporate these ideas into a replicable model of effective, youth-driven solutions to be implemented in school communities nationwide.
