president and Chief executive Officer

In July 2022, Monique Lorenzo joined the National Conference for Community and Justice, (NCCJ). As President and Chief Executive Officer, Lorenzo leads the human resources organization in its mission to advance equality, promote justice, and build strong, diverse, and inclusive communities throughout Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and beyond.

Lorenzo is a fierce Afro-Latina who has dedicated the past two decades as a faithful public servant, tireless change agent, and gifted advocate. She has a wealth of experience in the areas of nonprofit C-suite and corporate management.

Most recently she worked for BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc., commonly referred to as BJ's, a membership-only warehouse club chain based in corporate management. Prior to BJ's, Lorenzo served children, youth, and families in New York City with Phipps Neighborhoods.  Phipps' helps low-income communities in the South Bronx rise above poverty. There she served as a senior executive providing education services (GED/ESOL), comprehensive workforce development programming, financial literacy, summer camp, after-school, and leadership-based youth programs.  Prior to Phipps, she served young adults ages 12-24 at The Door, A Center of Alternatives in SoHo, New York City. The Door’s mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. In this role, she led a high-performing team to pilot a successful workforce development called, “This Way Ahead,” (currently known as This Way ONward) in partnership with the Gap Foundation and Gap Inc. (including Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic retail stores). Thanks to her influence and management acumen, the program has now been implemented in major cities across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Lorenzo is an adaptive leader, strategic visionary, and critical thinker whose results-based approach and transformational leadership support systems change. She believes intrinsic motivation and a growth mindset allow one to leverage strengths to guide positive change. Social justice lives at the core of her being! Lorenzo stands firm in her belief that all people should have equal human rights, afforded access to opportunities and live in safe, diverse and inclusive communities. NCCJ is an effective change catalyst and a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) model for social transformation - one person, one household, one school, one community, and one town at a time.

Lorenzo has a Master of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy, and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In her personal life, she loves to garden year-round, collect vinyl records, and play crossword puzzles. Lorenzo lives with her beloved husband, adored son, and four pets (turtle, dog and two cats) in Connecticut.
