On Friday, May 1st, NCCJ Youth Action Coalition (YAC) gathered for a YAC COVID-19 digital discussion led by Programs Manager, Castella Copeland. The focus of the conversation was the increased inequality stemming from the pandemic, how this healthcare crisis heightens the impact of policies charged by hate and bias.
Twelve YAC participants Zoomed in from around the community to share their stories of how they have been impacted by the pandemic. Through discussion and an identity mindmapping session, the group explored how identity and bias have been impacted by COVID-19. The youth shared their thoughts and feelings on the lessons that they have learned so far from quarantine and their hopes moving forward.
By the end of the session, the group had explored how their own identities had been impacted my COVID-19 and what they can do to take action and continue the conversation.
“It was great to connect with some of NCCJ's youth and to be able to have such an engaging virtual conversation," said NCCJ Programs Manager, Cassie Copeland, "These are very difficult times -- and being able to bring this group together, give them a forum to share their feelings and the opportunity to connect with other young people was fantastic. I can't wait for the next NCCJ YAC digital discussion!"
Check our events calendar for more upcoming YAC digital sessions and more programs focused on how our community can join together against bias and hate in the face of this crisis.
